Difference between Microprocessor and Microcontroller

Microprocessor

  • Multi task
  • Ram, rom, i/o ports & timer can be added externally and can vary in numbers
  • Designers can decide the number of ports needed
  • External support external memory and i/o ports makes a micro processor system heavier and costlier
  • External device require more space

Microcontroller

  • single task oriented
  • Ram, rom, i/o ports & timer can't be added externally
  • These components are to be embedded together on a chip and are fixed in numbers
  • Fixed number of memory or i/o makes a micro controller idea for limited but specific task
  • Light weight cheaper than micro processor
  • Less power and takes less space
